On 19 February 2026, the REBORN Training School took place at Politecnico di Torino, bringing together students, researchers, and project partners for an afternoon dedicated to multifunctional biomaterials and REBORN technologies.
The session opened with an introduction to the REBORN project, presenting its objectives, scientific vision, and technological approach to the development of a smart engineered cardiac patch for myocardial regeneration. Students were introduced to the multidisciplinary nature of the consortium and gained insight into the work that partners have been carrying out intensively over the past three years.

Following the introductory session, representatives from different REBORN partner institutions presented their respective areas of expertise and contributions to the project. Among the speakers present onsite was Dr. Ornella Ieropoli (CORCYM), who brought and demonstrated the delivery system developed by CORCYM for the REBORN patch, offering participants a concrete and practical perspective on the device and its implantation strategies.
The programme of the Training School was structured as follows:
-
14:00 – 15:00 – “Multifunctional biomaterials and REBORN technologies” | 1st REBORN Webinar
Prof. Chiara Vitale-Brovarone, Dr. Giorgia Montalbano | DISAT, Politecnico di Torino, Italy -
15:00 – 15:15 – “Therapeutic Ultrasound for Regenerative Medicine and Drug Delivery”
Dr. Andrea Cafarelli | Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa, Italy -
15:20 – 15:35 – Break
-
15:35 – 15:55 – “Hyaluronic acid hydrogel for controlled delivery of extracellular vesicles”
Dr. Miguel Lino | University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal -
15:55 – 16:10 – Demonstration and brief presentation of the delivery system developed for the REBORN patch and strategies for patch implantation
Dr. Ornella Ieropoli | CORCYM Srl, Saluggia, Italy -
16:10 – 16:30 – “A 3D co-cultured cardiac perfusion model for in vitro assessment of the REBORN patch”
Prof. Kenneth Dalgarno | Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK -
16:30 – 18:00 – Working groups
The students expressed strong appreciation for the Training School, highlighting both the depth of the scientific content and the opportunity to engage directly with researchers and professionals who have been shaping the REBORN project since its early stages. The event fostered dialogue, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of advanced regenerative technologies.
A special thank you goes to Politecnico di Torino for the hospitality and for providing the facilities that made the event possible, as well as to all the speakers who contributed in person and remotely to the success of the Training School.
